Catherine Smith

I was born in Queensland in 1961, and I am a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane College of Advanced Education, James Cook University, Victoria University, and Deakin University.

I was formerly a primary school teacher with a post-graduate academic focus on education, training and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. I have also served with the Australian Defence Force. These days I am part of an owner-builder project to erect a strawbale house and live sustainably off-grid.

The idea for this biographical work took shape in 2003. Among the youngest of 38 first cousins, I listened to stories from within the extended family and met strangers on whom my grandparents had left a lasting impression. Their story holds significance for the history of North Queensland and fills an important gap in pre-WW1 European migration.

I hope you enjoy the labour of love that is
Queensland’s Sugar King: The Zammit Legacy.
